The article analyses the pre-conditions and gives recommendations for application of the new methods for high education in the area of environmental management and governance, based on the competence and multi-disciplinary approaches. The experience of development and implementation of a special multidisciplinary course “Introducing eco-innovations in urban governance” is analyzed. The course which goes beyond the traditional curricula for environmental managers has been developed by an international team of lecturers in the framework of the ReSET project on university cooperation. The course aimed to explore the potentials of the innovative approaches in high education, such as context-based, experience-based, problem-oriented, project-oriented and other approaches. The article gives detailed description of the course, including curricula and evaluation criteria for students. The main problems and limitations as well as the opportunities and perspectives for introducing similar courses in the universities of the CIS countries are discussed. Recommendations for practical organization and implementation of problem-oriented multi-disciplinary courses delivered by an international lecturers’ team are given based on the experience of the authors and feedback evaluation by the students.
