Abstract. In recent years, the Russian labor market has experienced an acute shortage of workforce, which has driven companies into fierce competition for specialists. On the one hand, this has resulted in employees receiving additional benefits and payments, sometimes unjustified. These strengthen the employees’ influence on company management and allow them to affect decision-making processes, while also creating additional financial burdens, especially for small and medium-sized companies with limited resources and low competitiveness. On the other hand, the emerging staff shortages and high turnover rates prevent companies from developing normally and operating with high profitability. The article systematizes the causes of the current labor shortage in Russia, provides an analysis of the negative consequences of this situation for small and medium-sized businesses, and proposes solutions to the problem. Data are presented on losses caused by staff turnover and shortages in a medium-sized power engineering company, along with formulas for calculating such losses.
