The non-compliance with the requirements to the zones of the sanitary protection of the water sources is one of the main reasons for poor quality of the drinking water pumped to the population of Russia from the centralized and not centralized systems of the water supply. During 2014 the good-quality drinking water had been provided only for the 2/3 population of the country. The offers directed on the improvement of the legal relationship in the field of drinking water supply are shown in the article, the legal basis for the extension of the list of the especially protected natural territories and the inclusion of the sanitary protection zones of the water supply sources in it is presented.
