The North-Western Region needs long-term programs aimed at infrastructure improvement that will contribute to further enhancement of life quality of the population. The system of measures connected with the modernization of centralized water supply system and including measures aimed at the realization of water, environmental and sanitary legislation requirements concerning a source of water plays an important part among strategic plans. The authors of this article analyze the situation in the region and report data concerning natural water quality, water sources' sanitary protection zones and the financial expenses needed to perform efficient water conditioning. They come to the conclusion that Lake Ladoga is a water source that meets present-day requirements to the greatest extent. It can be used as a basis for creating a reliable and safe water sector supporting life and activities of all national economy branches and promoting further consolidation of the region's constituent entities.
