The author considers the historical aspects of the transformation of transport systems of the late twentieth century; economic, technological and political factors that contributed to the transformation of transport systems. The article pays attention to the existing EU programmes for the development of transport systems and transport corridors; evaluated the experience of building a transport system in the Soviet Union. Distinctions of globalization from the integration of the world economy, the main factors of globalization of the world economy, affecting the development of transport systems. Set new requirements to the quality of transport systems imposed by the globalization of the world economy; problems of formation of the international transport systems and control tasks of national transport systems at the present stage of their development.
