The article discusses the participation of Russia in the system of the Continental Blockade created by Napoleon to fight with England. Authors investigate the motives which have forced Alexander I join a blockade. They analyze the influence of the blockade on the Russian economy and the effects of sanctions on Britain. A conclusion is made that the blockade and economic sanctions have not led to activation Russian economy. At the same time, participation in the continental system has allowed Russia better understand their place in the European economy, determine the vector of its development, realize its national interests, and start implementing a program of economic modernization of the country.
