The article highlight some questions related to the regional technology-driven development in a time of global economic downturn. The author underlines that regionalization of technological development has its objective roots. She considers different types of regional path of technological development and gives a special insight into innovation and imitation mode of technological development of regions. The article contains the distinction between industrial-technological and innovation clusters with a special focus on a decisive role of local universities in cluster development. The author makes a difference between market-driven regional technological development and state-driven, when regions are included into fulfillment of the state military programs. The article contains theoretical investigations and practical case studies, which entails the conclusion about specific type of management required for regional authorities on a way of transforming local economies into innovation and progress.
